Happy

   Name:  Happy
Design:  4" squares
Size:  37" by 42"
Fabric: Stash fabrics and scraps
Quilted: by me with Aurifil 50 wt in white in cross hatch

We had a great Fraser Valley Modern Quilt Guild sew in last Saturday and among other things, I got a great start on this baby quilt.  I like to have simple and distinct projects to work on at sew ins.  This baby quilt was just the ticket and I got a great start on it on my featherweight after completing a gift for my mum.  More on that later!

Yes, this is another baby quilt.  It seems that our son and daughter in law's friends keep having babies.  We hope it is quite contagious!  This is one is back to basics with simple 4" squares with a pop of black and white amidst the prints.  Very much in the spirit of Rita at Red Pepper Quilts.

Once again, I quilted this on the diagonal in a cross hatch with Aurifil 50 wt in white.  Happy!

This made me happy too.  Two finished quilts on the sewing room counter with a bunch of sweet peas from the garden in the background.  Nice!  I wish this was a scratch and sniff picture because the sweet peas are so fragrant!

And happy because we survived the Windows 10 upgrade and I was still able to upload pictures thanks to Husband!

Just Sit...

We have a funny challenge for our next Fraser Valley Modern Quilt Guild meeting.  A tush cush.  Yep.  I made this one today.  Scrappy purples with a touch of linen and a whole lot of quilting.  I pieced 'Sit..." and then micro-stipled in Aurifil 50 wt in grey around the letters.  I used the same thread on the match stick quilting.  And it is comfy.

I was trying to figure out what to do about the back and I discovered this fabulous cross weave in a pile of fabric that I use for bags and stuff.  I must have picked it up at a thrift store.  It is really lovely and extra wide.  Yum.  I will have to move it to a more respectful fabric location.

I had fun quilting the back in a cross hatch with a lovely hot pink Aurifil 50 wt.

MMM.  I think you can get an idea of the cross weave here.

Summer fun

EEP!  Milk glass!  I just returned from a road trip to Alberta to visit our daughter and our son-in-law.  They understand my obsession with milk glass and picked this set up for me a month or so ago.  Oh my goodness.  So awesome!

I have lots of pictures of my trip and will get those organized soonish but how about a vintage sheet?  I found this one with mum last week.  It is in excellent shape and really vibrant.  And I think it was only $2.  Thrift store score!

And don't these awesome socks look great on the sheet?  Our neighbour's mom knit these for me and a pair for Husband.  His are much more sedate.  Love them!

Even in the land of big trucks and wild animals, daughter and I found a great little quilt shop.  She loves to pick out fabric for me to buy.  There was a sale and the fat quarters were $2.  ANd I found a great black and white print.

And this beauty at another quilt shop on my way home!

So Much Fun!

I made this the other day.  It is a project from Krista's Make it Take it book.    I didn't use selvages though... I opened up the box I store all the little bits of vintage fabric in and cut up a bunch of 2.5" squares.  I did add in some non-vintage black and white prints for contrast but aside from the binding, and those black and white squares, this was made out of fabric dating from the 40s through to the 70s.  I recognize some of the prints from my childhood as my Mum sewed a lot and much of this is from her scraps.

Anyway, it was a lot of fun to sew up and will be just as fun to take with my featherweight to the next sew in.

I love that daisy print with the mauve, lilac and blue!  That is an old one!

On a Thursday and this is random

Last week it was giant raspberries and this week it is giant blueberries.  Seriously, you could cut some of our blueberries into pieces and share them with your friends.

The other day, I went shop hopping with a bunch of buddies from the most awesome Fraser Valley Modern Quilt Guild.  I had to take a picture of this laundromat next to one of the quilt shops we stopped at.  Such a great name!

And yesterday I stopped in at my school.  The school that I am moving to for the next school year and I was delighted to find that I have school bunnies.

You may have heard that British Columbia is having a very dry and hot spring and summer.  With that comes a lot a forest fires.  In the satellite map below, you can see that beige smudge in the centre.  Ya, that is forest fire smoke and it has been hanging around all week.  Some days are better than others.  On Monday, it completely obliterated the sun all day and we had this strange sepia light all day.  And the smell of campfire.  Today it is back  and not as thick but you can sure smell it this afternoon.  YUCK.  The smudge is right over Vancouver, Victoria and the surrounding areas.

While we were shop hopping, I was most delighted to see Cynthia's Merry Stitchmas Christmas fabric.  Talk about cute!!!!

And this is what I bought.  Some solids, some Densyse Schmidt and I bought 4 metres Anna Maria Horner from her Good Folks line from $5 a metre.  Score!  And one of the shops had some by the pound stuff and I actually found that bit of Katie Jump Rope fabric along with some Sandy Henderson fabric from long ago.  He he he.  Happiness.  Plus it is always so much fun to fabric shop with friends!  The roll of stuff is iron on vinyl.  Theoretically you can make your own waterproof fabric.  I am going to give it a whirl.

Quilt guild tonight and we are having an outdoor meeting at a local park.  Sweet!

I made this the other day

I have a friend who is off on a big trip to see her daughter in South Africa.  Don't you think she needed to have a knicker bag for her suitcase?  So there it is.  Suitable to store your clean undies or your laundry and at the same time, it looks quite fetching.  It was a big hit and it was a lot of fun to make.  I made one last year for myself... I think it is was even around the same time of the year. Yep, here it is.

Sew Sisters: New fabric and a sweet deal of the month

Sew Sisters has a pretty awesome deal of the month in July.  I don't know about you, but every time I cahnge my rotary blade, I think why did I not do that before?  It makes such a difference!

So if you wanted to stock up on rotary blades, you might want to check out some of the awesome new fabric.  I picked out a couple lines to show you both from Dashwood Studio.  I have some of each of these lines in my stash and I am going to add some more!  The Petite Street line is just lovely.  The stripe makes an awesome binding fabric.  Just saying.  And I just love the Scandanavian vibe of Annali.  Just so cool.  Skopelos has some gorgeous prints too.  Oh my!  So many choices!

Petite Street by Wendy Kendall for Dashwood Studios.

Annali by Stephani Thannhauser also for Dashwood.

Skoplelos by Katarina Rocella for Art Gallery Fabrics.

Pink and Gray Baby

  Name:  Pink and Gray Baby
Design:  4" squares
Size:  36" by 42"
Fabric: Stash/scrap fabrics
Quilted: by me with Aurifil 50 wt in white

This was a perfect way to incorporate a bunch of shabby chic florals in a baby quilt, don't you think?  I think it is just so pretty.  The grey dot and the text print update the florals nicely and I threw in a bunch of solid pink squares as well.  I have to say that most of this quilt was made from pre-cut 4" squares from my scraps.  I pre-cut a bunch of 2.5", 4" and 5" squares when I was cleaning up all my scraps this past spring.  It is simply amazing how fast a quilt goes together when you have the fabric already chopped up.  I backed the sheet with a fabulous pink striped thrifted cotton sheet.  Quilted on the diagonal in both directions in Aurfil 50 wt in white.  Perfect.  Linking up with Amanda Jean for finish it up Friday.  Holidays begins today for the summer.  Woo hoo!

Random Thursday: Funky Bacon and Raspberries

My friend Cynthia was asked to contribute to Cheryl Arkison's new book.  So she did.  But being Cynthia, her contribution is pretty awesome because everyone knows that everything is better with bacon.  Even quilts.  So Cynthia designed a bacon quilt because... well, you will have to buy the book to find out.  He he he.  Cynthia asked a few of her peeps to test her pattern.  It was awesome.  Because Cynthia is like that.  Her pattern went together like... bacon.  Yum.

Here are my bacon blocks.  Cool, huh? Look at how perfectly the bacon blocks match at the seam.  Perfect.

And then there are raspberries.  We are picking berries big time right now.  It is stinking hot.  And the raspberries are HUGE!  Check this one out.  And yes, it has been in the freezer.  We freeze them on trays and then pop them into bags.  They are so much nicer that way.
