Summer pillow covers... A Warp and Weft Sewing Society Project

 I finished up a Warp and Weft Sewing Society project on the weekend... summer pillow covers for the pillows on the couch.  I get a little bit bored with the same ones all the time so it is a whole pile of fun to change the covers out seasonally.  These bright colours combined with the low volume prints from Caolyn Friedlander's Botanics line were just the ticket.  Esmarie, the most excellent proprietor of Warp and Weft sent me some lovely fabric to have fun with!

The design is a disappearing 9 patch with a twist  and the twist is that I didn't follow any rules.  Usually when you make a disappearing 9 patch there are some rules at least.  Rules like no like fabrics touch and stuff like that.  I didn't do that and I didn't follow that rule on purpose.  I wanted the negative space to be more prominent with the lovely Botanics prints.  And that is exactly what happened.  I started with 3" squares of the prints and made a bunch of little 9 patch blocks, then whacked them into quarters and stitched them back together without too much attention to what went where.  I sashed the blocks with linen in 1" strips and then quilted the covers closely about 1/8" apart with a lovely butter coloured Aurifil in 40 wt (#2315).

I am most pleased with the outcome and the couch is looking very happy for summer!  The pillows are a big 22" square when finished and are backed with linen and finished with an lapped zipper.  So fabulous!
