How do you spell gray? or grey?

It's official.  I have made all the letters for Proverbial Sunshine.  Through the wonders of digital photography, we can imagine it all together...

What is next?  I have to trim all the letters and join the letters together to words and words into phrases.  And phrases into the layout.  It is definitely progress!  This is a Denyse Schmidt pattern and a QAL hosted by Krista at Poppyprint.

I had a great quandary about how to spell gray.  Or grey?  I did some research and it really seems to be an either or.  I tried to find the original lyrics for the song to see how it was spelled but that seems pretty loose too.  I went with an "a".

I have also made significant progress on my Scrappy Stash quilt.  All ready for quilting it is!

And no progress on my Another Star quilt because I was so focused on these 2 things.  Nonetheless, it was a really great sewing week.  Linking up with Lee's Work in Progress Wednesday!

  1. I love it! The letters AND the song! :) Can't wait to see it done. Looking forward to seeing your scrappy stash quilt, too. xo

  2. I researched this a while ago. Both are acceptable, but "a" is used in the States and "e" is used in England. I still use "e" even though I'm American. So the choice is yours :)

  3. I remember in second grade that "gray" was a spelling word. I spelled it "grey" and it was counted wrong. I was quite indignant and used the dictionary to support my case, but I still lost the appeal. :(

The enforcement of conformity worked though, because I spell it "gray" these days. :)

  4. I tend to use "grey" for things I feel kindly toward (i.e. "The sky was a lovely shade of silver grey.") and "gray" for things that I don't. "The dishwater was a dingy, dullish gray." I probably associate the 'e' with an air of sophistication… I don't mind going 'grey' but I'd hate to go 'gray.' You know?

  5. I think that I use the grey spelling exclusively but I have never thought about it- I have known some people whose last name is spelled gray..
I love your word quilt.. my gran always sang that song to me or at least it is a song that I associate with her- for a long time after she passed away the song would make me cry- now mostly it brings me happy memories...
A very fun quilt- thanks for sharing...
    Warmest regards,
    Anna

  6. That is gorgeous! I think AY is the American spelling and EY is the British spelling.

  9. I'm Canadian, so I use "grey", the British spelling. Your quilt will look fantastic, I love the grey/yellow combination!

  10. If it makes you feel any better about your choice of spelling - buy a pack of crayons! Crayola spells it as GRAY on their crayon. And you know they would want it be correct for all the kidlets. :-)

  11. I'm Canadian, so I use the British spelling: grey. I had to think about it for a second though, so I went with my instinct, typed it out, and saw that I'd typed 'grey'.

By the way, as a fellow Canadian blogger, you should check out the Needle and Thread Network. It has a WIP Wednesday just for Canadians. Have you heard of it?

  12. I was told "A" for American and "E" for 'other'.

  13. Grey / gray - I'm an American living in New Zealand and I spell everything wrong according to someone! Regardless, I love the colors (or is it colours?) of your quilt and the words you chose.

  14. It's grey! I'm Australian and we use British spelling predominantly. I also think gray looks unsophisticated, like people can't spell, but that's years of conditioning too! I love your blog. You have very similar taste in fabric and quilts to me. I envy the time you spend on them. Like you, I work in a school 4 days a week and have 3 kids at home. No spare time to sew recently! sarahleighATinternodeDOTonDOTnet
