Random Thursday... Stupidheads... a bird story

Okay.  So it is a blurry photo.  This is our bird feeder.  It has been modified.  The grey "skirt" is the modification Husband made out of sheet metal to thwart the squirrels.  We call it the "squirt".  Yep.  Squirrel skirt.  It works.  Drives the squirrels a little crazy because they just cannot access the feeder.  He he he.  Don't worry, we feed the squirrels too.  They have a different feeder.  They also have a zillion hazelnut trees for their dining pleasure.

Do you see all those birds at the feeder?  They are Evening Grosbeaks but we call them "Stupidheads" because they just keep flying into the windows of the house.  They hit really hard and then they bounce up and fly away.  They have really hard heads and they just don't seem to learn from their crashes.  Sometimes they hit a little harder and then Dr. Doolittle aka Husband goes out to work his bird whisperer magic.   I took a picture of this one before he recovered enough to fly away.  Dr. Doolittle was giving him a pep talk.  Silly birds.  Stupidheads.  Kind of pretty aren't they?

Linking up with Cindy for Random Thursday.

  1. Love this! My ILs also have a squirrel problem and a crow problem. But FIL has taken a less humane tack at solving the problem :(

  4. My Dad used to do battle with squirrels vs. bird feeders when I was a teen so I know just what you're talking about. And they had feeders of their own as well, silly creatures. They just want what they can't have.

  5. So very pretty! I just hate when birds fly into our windows. I have used stickies on the windows - or fun things like flashing snowflakes. Sort of cool for us to enjoy.

  7. We have a lot of stupidheads in NE. We don't have those grosbeaks, but we have the red breasted ones and I love to watch them. They are black and white with a red patch on their breast. They hit the windows, the yellow finch, the Blue Jays, the bluebirds, they think they are flying into the room! Poor birds, some don't make it and then the cats find them and crunch, crunch, crunch...sorry about that.

  8. What pretty birds. I have never seen that particular type of bird in The U.S. where I live. But, I do have plenty of the silly things slamming into my windows and sometimes I have to play birdie doctor also. thanks for the nice, birdie post.

  9. They really are beautiful. Our Grosbeaks are Pine Grosbeaks with red on them. Very beautiful. Don't know if they are any smarter...

  10. I used to keep a "knockout cage" just for that purpose. The birds would hit the window, I would pick them up, put them in the knockout cage, when they came to I'd let them go again. This way my cats didn't get to them. Poor things, you have to forgive them as they are birdbrains!!!
You have some pretty stupidheads there.

  11. Love your squirrel skirt! We are always having squirrel wars at our house, too! So far, we haven't found anything they can't get at, but we keep trying. May need to try the squirrel skirt idea!

  12. I wonder if a squirt would work for cats. I want, want a bird bath, but have a real birder cat. Sigh, probably not. She'd just consider it a bird airport and take them down on take-off. She can jump extremely high!

You know how they become stupidheads, don't you. They keep flying into windows and knocking their stuffing out of their brain.
