A library book bag for the grandboy

The little guy needed a library book bag and so I made one.  I used painter's drop cloth fabric from Canadian Tire.  I love that stuff.  Cheap, sturdy, washes well.  And you get a huge quantity of fabric in the package.  I actually made drapes out of it last spring for the family room.  Anyway.  Here it is.  I used the Jane Market Bag pattern from Posy Gets Cosy.  This is a great pattern and I have used it a ton.  You can vary the look of the bag by altering the size of the boxed corners.  In this case I cut out 3" square so the bag is a bit narrower.  I used some remnants from my buddy Cynthia for the pockets.  Just in case you need snacks or a place to stash your choo choo when you are finished with the library. The bag is lined with a thrift store striped cotton. 

 I think he is going to like this. 

More Jane Market Bags...

Remember when I said I really loved this pattern.  Jane Market Bags.  I really meant it.  They are so much fun to make and I keep churning them out.  I am using a lot of home decorator weight fabric that I have picked up at the thrift shop for next to nothing.  

And this one is lined with vintage sheets. I used it on the inside of the handles too just for fun.

And this one is lined with a small check gingham.  I am finding this is a good way to use fabric that you might not use in quilting such as this gingham.  It is a polycotton.  Why not?  I am going to use both of these as gift bags.  Why not???  I have tweaked the pattern.  I cut out 3" corners not 4" corners.  That's all.  You can mess with the pockets too.  Why not??? Hey, it's Monday already!

Yesterday, I made this Jane Market Bag.  I tweaked it just a little bit.  I cut the corners out at 3" rather than the 4" so my bag is a little taller and a little narrower.  I have to say that this is the second one of these that I have put together.  The first one was made from quilting cotton and  I found that it was too floppy and not substantial enough.  Enter bag number two.  I picked up this fabric at the thrift store on the weekend.  Many metres of this heavy decor weight stuff.  Sort of a cross between a canvas and a denim.  I have no idea what  you call it.  The pockets are made from some upholstery samples.  Also thrift store.  The samples were not quite big enough so I added a bit to the top of the pocket.  So classy.  The bag is lined with a cotton from my stash that picks up the pinky colours of the main fabric.  Jane Market Bag.  Super strong.  Very green.  That is to say... recycled/upcycled fabric for a reusable shopping bag.  Yep.  Green.  Very green.  I believe this the first of many of these to come.  Do you have this pattern?  I think it is a classic must have pattern.  Just saying.
